I’m not an expert or anything, just sharing what actually worked for me. These are small things, but when you combine all of them, the saving is quite big. Honestly, I didn’t expect it to go this much down, but yeah it did..
Here’s exactly what I did
1) Replaced my old AC with a 5-star one
I was using an old LG 3-star inverter AC. It used around 1600 watt on full load. I replaced it with a Daikin 5-star AC, now it takes only around 990–1000 watt.
So direct saving here is around 35% to 40%.

What I did:
- Sold old AC for ₹10,000
- Bought new AC for ₹35,000
- Net investment: ₹25,000
My simple rule:
- If electricity saving recovers your money in ~24 months, just go for it.
Small tip (very useful): To find approx watt usage > Cooling capacity ÷ ISEER. In my case: 5280 ÷ 5.2 =1015 watt Check 5 Star Air conditoners posted on our website. Click here

2) Made my ceiling heat-proof
If your roof gets direct sunlight, this is VERY important. I used Asian Paints Damp Guard on roof. It helps in waterproofing + reduces heat.
You can also use lime white, very cheap (under ₹1000). This alone reduced room temperature by maybe 5–7 degree. So AC doesn’t struggle much, and doesn’t run at full load all the time.

3) Shade the outdoor unit (but don’t block air)
Outdoor unit gets very hot in sun. If you give some shade (without blocking airflow), it runs more efficiently.
Saving is small, like 2%–5%, but still worth it.

4) Use ventilation fan before starting AC
I started running exhaust/ventilation fan for 10–15 mins before turning on AC. Hot air goes out first → room cools faster → AC works less.
Simple logic but works. As you know, hot air is lighter than cool air, exhaust fan pull them out quickly.
5) Always use ceiling fan with AC
Earlier I used to switch off fan when AC was on (big mistake). Now I keep fan on:
- Air circulates better
- Room feels cooler even at higher temp
6) 26–27°C is more than enough
Trust me, you don’t need 20–22.
At 26 or 27:
- Comfort is still good
- AC uses much less power
In my case, it uses around 300–400 watt instead of full load.
Also use economy mode if your AC has it.
7) Clean filters every 15 days
This is very underrated. Dirty filter = more load = more electricity. You can easily clean it yourself (just check any YouTube video).
It can increase power usage by 10–15% if not cleaned. Also wash outdoor unit once in a while.
8) Save extra using cashback card
I use SBI Cashback Credit Card via PhonePe to pay electricity bill. It gives around 10% cashback, but after charges actual saving is around 7–8%.
Not huge, but still free saving basically. You can apply for SBI Phonepe Credit card here Apply Now
Final Result
After applying all these things together, my summer electricity bill reduced by more than 50%.
Not one trick, but combination of small small things made big difference.
If you try even 3–4 of these, you will definately see change
